ATFC Goes North

Big gun both in the studio and behind the decks, ATFC is about to embark on a short tour of North America, taking in 3 of the continent's top clubs; Ecco Club, Los Angeles on the 15th of July; Republic Club, Vancouver on the 16th and Set, Miami on the 18th. We caught up with him before he left to find out exactly what's been on his mind of late.

What previous experiences have you had playing in North America?

The first time I played was this year at the Winter Music Conference. I was lucky enough to play a lot of the best gigs; Defected at Set, Toolroom at Space, Juicy at Nikki Beach and The Beatport Pool Party at The National. Quite an introduction!

How does the crowd there compare to in Europe or the rest of the world?

Well, it's hard for me to say because, of course, the crowd in Miami during WMC is a huge mix of nationalities. I did notice a fair few Americans throwing shapes so I'm sure they like to party.

Do you have any favourite first/last set tunes at the moment?

I'm playing Bushwacka’s edit of ‘Billie Jean’ as my last record right now - for obvious reasons. I'm finding I'm playing my track 'Does It Feel Good?' as a kick off track although I never really know until I plug my headphones in.

If you could have a monthly residency anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

Achill Club, Javea, Spain. It's on the beach in my home town and would mean I wouldn't have to get on a plane for one week in the month!

You’re known as ‘the funky chile’…Just how funky are you?

If you were to put Farley Jackmaster Funk, Funkmaster Flex, Funkerman, Ministers De La Funk, Funkagenda, James Brown’s Funky People and Funkadelic into a mincer - whatever came out wouldn't be as funky as me.

DJing or producing?

I'm a DJ first and foremost and have been since the age of 13.

Which DJs did you hope to emulate when you first started?

Trevor Nelson, Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay, DJ Premier, Masters at Work.

Any personal favourites from your years in the studio?

Actually some of my favourites are the stuff nobody gets to hear –  the downtempo tracks I make when I'm bored of House Music. Although a house track that sticks out is my mix of Funkerman’s 'Speed Up' - that did a lot for me

What else is ATFC up to at the moment?

Just finishing my new track for Defected. It's a cover of Lil Louis' ‘The Conversation’. I’ve also just remixed the new Kim English single for Nervous and Sandy Rivera & Andy Daniels 'Whatever'. Just about to start a collaboration with Funkagenda

Anything else you’d like to tell us about…?

I'm just about to take delivery of a nice 3 piece suite for our pool area. It's a 3 seater sofa and 2 armchairs in a kind of moss colour. They'll go nicely with the rather expensive umbrella we bought last year. Oh and I think my hay fever has gone. I think I'll keep taking the tablets though, just for a laugh.
