The end of the year usually means one thing; lists. People feel compelled to sum up 365 days of hard graft by cataloguing the most successful movers and shakers in any number of different categories. Probably the best known on the dance scene in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs list – an annual account of the ‘biggest’ players on the dance music scene, and while their list undoubtedly has its place, many clamour for something with a little more thought (and a little less trance).
Step forward Blues & Soul, who have attempted to collate the 40 Essential DJs from the last 40 years of Black British music culture. It’s an intimidating task as they themselves admit, but makes for very interesting reading. It’s a diverse list, with those honoured with a mention ranging from Gilles Peterson and Norman Jay to Tony Blackburn via Paul Oakenfold and Pete Tong.
