On Saturday the 1st of August, one of the UK's most influential labels Junior Boys Own take over The Bar at Minstry of Sound for the summer Defected In The House shindig in what promises to be an inspired union of two of the London dance scene's bastions of house music. With Terry Farley and X-Press II's Rocky and Diesel manning the decks, we caught up with JBO founder Terry to get the lowdown on the label and something else that's been on his mind of late...

For people who might not have heard of the label before, explain briefly what Junior Boys Own is...

JBO is a independent london record label that was born out of BOYS OWN back in the day. We discovered The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, X-Press 2 and Black Science Orchestra amongst others.

How long have you been DJing?

25 years - man and boy.

Any standout gigs or experiences?

Far too many fab times to single out one. DC10 and Pacha in Ibiza, Faith at Fabric on the club's opening weekend, the Wag club back in the rare groove days and Shoom, Trip and Spectrum and The Hacienda during the acid house era are all experiences I'll never forget. More recently Unit and Loop in tokyo have also been fantastic.

Do you enjoy it now as much as you did back in the day?

In different ways, yes. Back in the day I was...let's say a bit of a 'party animal' and it all shot by at an alarming rate. These days I enjoy myself in a more relaxed manner.

What do you think of Ministry as a venue?

The main room is the best room in the UK and the system is boss. The Ministry has always sufferd from London snobbery with the heads complaing of its 'bridge and tunnel' crowd but I can remember Larry Levan, Tony Humphries, Junior Vasquez and Frankine Knuckles all spinning there when it was near perfect.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement with the label?

Showcasing new London and UK talent and being a gobby mouthpeice for a new generation that went on to relative greatness.

How has the music you play developed over the years? Which producers are you currently championing in your sets?

I go through phases depending on what my fave club is at the time. In the 90's it was the Sound Factory and I really got into deep, tracky wildpitch NY house - a sound that's actually making a comeback now. My fave club of the naughties was easily Circo Loco at DC10 (RIP). It opened my mind to techno and minimal (RIP - Ha ha!). At the moment I really dig Livio & Roby and RPR - both DJ clicks from Romania  - Radio Slave, Spencer Parker, Jamie Jones and Clive Henry from the UK and out of the States I'm back on the DJ Sneak tip big time.

If you could go back and do it all again, what if anything would you do differently?

Not get so fucked up.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about..?

What's going on with John Terry?? We thought he was Mr. Chelsea and he's ended up just another greedy overpaid footballer ready to take a extra shilling and forget his background...mind you I know a few DJs just like that.
