You know the season’s started when you start hearing sketchy reports of big tunes, packed clubs and bad behaviour. Well – in the words of the Moloko – the time is now. Our island resident Bex has touched down for the summer and she’s be hitting us with weekly updates of island life, starting with tales of delirious crowds and dancing topless on cars…
So far, so fun! I arrived on Thursday night after a flight alongside Mr Calvin Harris who was over to play at F*** Me I’m Famous opening that same night. I was met by Simon Dunmore himself who whisked me back to the Defected Villa to meet up with the rest of the crew. A quick change and we hit Pacha where the queue was unbelievable. Tanned legs and heeled feet were right around the block waiting for Guetta to hit the decks. It had only been open half an hour and it was uncertain we would even get in but luckily Simon Dunmore knows a few people on the door so we got ushered through the restaurant ;)
It was a struggle to get up to the terrace but once we were there we were met by Calvin Harris who told Simon that he had once called him when Neighbours was on about ten years ago! Simon was clearly a little taken aback and asked him to repeat himself. Calvin explained that he had sent Simon some demos and Simon called him and told him he thought his stuff was really good and not to give up – he remembered it ever since! We then all go and check the main room back out and it’s like a stadium concert! Everyone is squished together screaming with their hands in the air, the atmosphere is electric!
Later on I am walking back through the terrace and get chatting to Mark Ronson who is doing a talk at the International Music Summit the next day. He steals my cigarette off me and then tells me he is really looking forward to it as he loves talking to people who are all really interested in music and out there producing it and playing it. He genuinely loves Ibiza and has memories of partying over here as well as doing the family thing with his Dad. Great guy!
With all of this IMS talk, I decided to check it out myself so hung out round the pool at the Gran Hotel for a few hours on Friday. It was like a DJ-fest! They were everywhere! Busy P sat by me and told me he had only had 2 hours sleep and wasn’t feeling too great from the night before and there were similar stories all round! Cassius were hanging out and having their picture taken by everyone, Pete Tong was pool-side with his kids in between interviews and I managed to catch up with super-cool girl, Heidi, who told me about her wildest moment in Ibiza being when she jumped off a car roof in the Ocean Drive Hotel carpark topless and then rolled around in the gravel and had to be removed. A girl after my own heart definitely!
The island is buzzing, it’s busier than any other year at this time and everyone sure is here to party! Now with all this talk of parties it’s time for me to do some myself....I’m off to DC10!!
