Maverick Back To Basics mahatma Dave Beer is planning a major new club in Leeds according to a lengthy post on his Facebook page this week.
The news follows the sudden closure of another Leeds club, The Garage, where up until last November Beer was continuing to run Back To Basic events. “The Garage...was dramatically closed without warning and for reasons we will never get to the bottom of” Beer writes. “But one thing is for sure some people weren’t playing from a straight deck resulting in myself and others losing a lot of money. It left me without any income at all, but as they say that which does not kill us will only make us stronger.”
Beer goes on to thank those who have helped and supported him in recent “taxing” months including Jamie Jones, David Morales, Paul Oakenfold, Irvine Welsh, Mr C and the late Frankie Knuckles, before lamenting his inability (still) to put on a night in Ibiza and confessing that “for the first time ever I’ve thought about packing it all in and doing something less stressful.”
Ultimately, however, Beer has decided to stick with it. “I will be bringing a new club on my own, designed for comfort and quality. A creative space for those in the know. Somewhere to lose reality a multi sensory experience with a proper system built for the club. NOT FUCKTION BLEEDING ONE” he claims. “I was going to LA or Miami even my spiritual home Ibiza, but how can I turn my back on the place that's served me so well. A place with two ee's and LSD in its name. I need to stay for a while and sort this shit out and give Leeds the club it needs.”
The proposed space, set to be called FIFO (an acronym for Fit In or Fuck Off), would include at least two rooms “for young and old alike” – one for upfront, cutting-edge house, the other for funky, alternative dance grooves. Whilst Beer promises to stand on the door himself “so no bull shitters will get in”, FIFO would be members-only. Only approved members would be able to invite additional guests.
“YOU KNOW THE DANCE PEEPS,” Beer concludes, “it’s time to get Back To Basics. I’ve seen some good locations got some pledges of financial backing to match what I have put in.
