As the dust settles on the 2013 Ibiza season, the eyes of the electronic music faithful turn to the next major event in the year’s calendar; the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE).
Founded in 1996 as a three-day conference and attended by 300 delegates with thirty DJs performing, the ADE was initially based in De Balie for the daytime conference and at night featured shows in three venues: Paradiso, Melkweg and Club Escape. Now, the ADE is the leading electronic music platform and the biggest club festival in the world for the whole spectrum of electronic sub-genres, with dozens of events boasting hundreds of DJs across many of Amsterdam’s top clubs and music venues.
Deep Down & Defected Amsterdam 2013 pays homage to both Amsterdam’s now well-established status as a major city for house music, and the continuing popularity of the deep house sound.
This fourth edition features 47 of the hottest new tracks and remixes around, unmixed and DJ friendly, alongside three bonus mixes from Defected founder Simon Dunmore. Here, Dunmore picks out 10 tracks from the compilation and tells us why they made the cut.
NB: Some of these tracks are album exclusives, so there aren't any previews we can share with you. You'll just have to pick up the compilation to hear them!
Green Velvet 'Bigger Than Prince' (Hot Since 82 Remix)
I have a huge amount of respect for Green Velvet; he has been in the industry for a very long time and has consistently proven himself as an innovative, quality producer, managing to move with the times where others have failed. Hot Since 82’s remix is worthy of its place at #1 in the Beatport Deep House chart and it gets a massive reaction whenever it’s played out.
Huxley & Shenoda 'Premier'
I am very pleased to be given the opportunity to work with these two talented producers. Everyone’s up for the house/garage fusion at the moment, but no-one has done it better than these two to my ear. ‘Premier’ is the darker of the two from the Chatsworth Sound EP, but I had to include both cuts; you’ll find ‘I Don’t Know’ on here too.
Yousef featuring Charli Taft 'I See' (Shadow Child Remix)
Yousef is someone I’ve known for years and have come to work closely with over the last 18 months or so. I have massive respect for him, as a DJ, a producer and for what he has achieved with Circus. ‘I See’ features some incredible vocals from Charli Taft and Shadow Child’s rendition is guaranteed to destroy any house dancefloor.
MK featuring Alana 'Always' (Gerd Bonus Bounce)
Rarely can a producer rule a decade, take a break and then rule another but Mark Kinchen has done so and in a spectacular fashion. ‘Always’ was one of his stand-out tracks from the 90s and absolutely stands the test of time. Gerd’s Bonus Bounce Edit adds a bit of extra weight to the production without straying too far from the original. It’s old-school meets contemporary as only Gerd can do.
Pablo Fierro 'How Could I' (DJ Spen E3 E5 Mix)
If there’s one thing Spen has mastered in over twenty years of producing house music it’s how to get a crowd moving. This is a subtle Manuel Göttsching E2 E4 vibe that never fails to inject some life into the dancefloor.
Sonny Fodera 'Trainsurfing'
Both the consistency and variety of Sonny Fodera’s work is staggering… there must be so many DJs from a variety of backgrounds that have a track of his in their arsenal. ‘Trainsurfing’ shows he is more than capable of producing a chugging dark and gritty roller which stays deep but still absolutely goes off.
Ben Westbeech 'Falling' (Deetron Paradise Vocal Remix)
Ben Westbeech AKA Breach has had quite a year with ‘Jack’ which must have been played at least once at the majority of nights I attended in Ibiza over the summer. He’s a producer who knows the strength of his own vocals and ‘Falling’ is one of many examples. Whereas the original has nu-disco vibes Deetron’s version really adds that melancholy atmosphere which makes it an ideal pick for this compilation.
Wallflower 'Say You Won’t Ever' (Larry Heard Club Mix)
We picked this up from Rebirth earlier this year. Having someone like Larry Heard still producing in this day and age speaks wonders for the scene. Showing no signs of slowing down, his remix of Wallflower is an utter transformation from the original and evidence that he is still one of the most innovative and original producers in the game. A stunning remix of a beautiful vocal.
Guti 'Hope' (Fosky Remix)
‘Hope’ marked the first release of our breakout label DFTD and it was extremely satisfying to see how it took off in Ibiza this summer, with its Balearic and blissful vibes being heard everywhere. Fosky adds a dark twist to the deeper original version.
GotSome 'On Point'
GotSome are a new and exciting signing for Defected, and their record ‘Bassline’ has already turned a lot of heads with encouraging support from B.Traits, Annie Mac, Mistajam, Toddla T and Skream. ‘On Point’ is another cut from their debut EP and demonstrates their versatility. We already have more music in the bag from these guys, and I think they will be ones to watch over the coming months.
