Sam Divine steps up to front one of Defected's most ravenously-received mix album series, Deep Down & Defected.
Deep Down & Defected Volume 5: Sam Divine is packed with tracks from the deeper end of the house spectrum, reflecting the direction of Divine’s sets at Ministry of Sound and beyond of late, including MK, Chasing Kurt, Oliver $, Cristoph, Kerri Chandler, Dennis Ferrer and many more.
Sometimes a title is enough for you to get the idea of what a compilation is all about, and Deep Down & Defected aims to do exactly that. Back rooms rather than main rooms, basements rather than beach clubs, basslines rather than breakdowns; Deep Down & Defected epitomises a sound that Defected has long championed, and the latest instalment is another must-have for any deep house fan.
Sam Divine’s selection stretches over more than two decades of house music, from early 90s anthems in the shape of MK ‘Always’ (MK Club Mix) and Mood II Swing feat. Carol Sylvan ‘Closer’ right up to the present day, with Cristoph ‘Nowhere To Go’, Huxley & Shenoda ‘Premier’ and S.Chu feat. Terri Walker ‘Closure’ holding their own against these undisputed classics. Also included is Groovstyle ‘Love’ (Underground Mix) – an E-Smoove record that saw a vinyl release back in 1994 but that has never previously been available digitally.
“Selecting and mixing the tracks for this was challenging – I wanted to make every track count” says Sam. “The aim was to build something that was a true reflection of what I’m about musically, and this is absolutely it.
“I hope that people dig the selection; DJing is all about sharing your passion, so hopefully there are a few undiscovered gems in there. This summer is going to be massive, and this is the perfect way to kick start it!”
Fronting this new mix album is the latest in a series of exciting announcements for Sam Divine in 2014. As well as taking over as the new host of the Defected In The House Radio Show from April, she will also be Defected’s resident DJ at BoOom! Ibiza this season, playing multiple dates throughout the summer.
