Defected In The House India 2013 – mixed by the multi-talented Nikhil Chinapa – has shot straight to the top of the iTunes Dance chart in India, and broken into the top 5 in the overall albums chart.
Traditionally dominated by Bollywood soundtracks and EDM-styled mix compilations, the popularity of a house-focused mix may signal shifting tastes in India’s dance music culture, something that both Defected and Nikhil Chinapa have long championed.
Considered a massive icon at the top of the nation’s industry, Chinapa is making hugely influential strides in progressing India’s dance music keeping it refreshing and innovative. A forerunner for over 10 years, he is a man of all trades boasting a diverse track record which includes being a DJ, VJ, MTV mascot, radio host, promoter and festival director.
“In this first compilation of mine, I've chosen to share the house music that I love” says Chinapa of the project. “I've also tried to create a snapshot of what I hope dance music (or at least a part of it) will sound like in the coming year - deep and soulful, while also being quirky and fun. This is music that moves me emotionally, triggers happy memories and makes me want to dance, smile and believe.”
Defected and Defected In The House events has been regular features in the Indian dance music landscape for the past few years. We were the first record label to host a stage at Goa’s award-winning Sunburn music festival back in 2008, after which followed continent-wide tours by artists like Copyright and The Shapeshifters.
The fact that an underground dance compilation has charted so highly in India is evidence of the continuing rise of house music across the globe, and a success of which we are extremely proud.
