Housed in three historic warehouses built along the Singapore River, Zouk was founded in 1991 and has since been hailed by illustrious international DJs, musicians and media as exemplary purveyors in the world nightlife arena. Before Zouk found its home within the walls of the three warehouses, the buildings were in a dilapidated condition. Being an architect by degree, Lincoln Cheng, founder and owner of Zouk, meticulously restored the buildings to its original state and transformed it into a modern club with an all-white contemporary interior.
Now nestled within its exterior are four different musical enclaves - Zouk, the main dance room in the complex with its unique interior architecture using Gaudi inspired Moorish tiles and forms; Velvet Underground, the up-market, cosmopolitan and sexy sister club adorned with original artworks by Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Romero Britto and more; Phuture with its futuristic design and specially commissioned Massimo Iosa Ghini paintings; and Wine Bar, the pre-club and chill out bar boasting both an indoor and alfresco area.
The three dance rooms – Zouk, Velvet Underground and Phuture – are each fitted with a custom-made Gary Stewart Audio (GSA) system from USA, all 100% analogue which gives a warmer sound. Every piece of digital equipment goes through a digital to analogue converter. GSA is the best sound system in the market and Gary Stewart chooses each of his client carefully. And with the Zouk complex’s inventive architecture, distinctive style and mind-blowing attention to detail, Zouk constantly strives to deliver an experience like no other.
Zouk, meaning “village party” in Creole, has established itself as Singapore’s definitive entertainment institution. Always an advocate of breaking norms and setting new standards with its forward driven music policy, Zouk is consistently voted one of the best clubs in the world by international media such as DJ Mag and Resident Advisor, and has garnered the Singapore Tourism Board’s (STB) Best Nightspot award for numerous years, the latest being 2007. Zouk has played host to some of the world’s top DJs and music acts - Armin van Buuren, Carl Cox, Chemical Brothers, Grace Jones, John Digweed, Justice, Nouvelle Vague, Paul van Dyk, Ricardo Villalobos, Steve Bug and Tiga, just to name a few.
And to bring Zouk’s spirit and energy to the great outdoors and an even larger audience, ZoukOut was conceived in 2000 with the ambition to be the region’s definitive outdoor dance music festival. Set to celebrate its 10th anniversary next year, ZoukOut is now raved about by top DJs in the global clubbing circuit and sworn by legions fans as the de facto 'must-go' party in their calendar of events. Awarded STB’s Best Leisure Event Experience 2007, ZoukOut saw the largest turnout of 26,000 party revelers in 2008, with 40% being tourists from around the region, bringing clubbers together from all over the world, truly living to its philosophy of “One World, One Music, One Tribe, One Dance”.
