We get a lot of very supportive messages sent to us at Defected Towers, but this young man's message to Simon Dunmore really caught our eye. Miles is a 9 year old DJ with aspirations to play at Pacha and was asking for a bit of advice. Needless to say Simon was only too willing to offer a few words of wisdom, so we thought that we'd share his email and a couple of pictures he sent in with you.

Here's what Miles asked...

Hello Simon,

My name is Miles I am 9 years old I live in glasgow and I am very into DJing I am a big fan of yours I have watched videos of you and defected on you tube/ Last week in my school we were asked to write down in our jotters what we wanted to do when we were older I wrote I want to be a top DJ in Ibiza in Pacha like simon dunmore. My dad said he is looking forward to the next parents night to see what the teacher says about it.

I also know that there is a 13 year old boy who has DJ'd in Ibiza. Can you give me any advice on how to be a top DJ and how to make it big?

This is my dad's email and he helped me write out what I wanted to say to you.

I hope you get back to me.

Thanks

Miles

And here's what Simon had to say...

Hey Miles,

Thank you for your email. I am very humbled by what you have written.

I count myself very lucky to do what I do, almost like a footballer that gets to play professionally. Sometimes it does not seem like work at all :-)

From a very young age I always loved music, I could not sing or dance so the best way to get involved was through dj'ing.

These days a top dj needs to be able to produce tracks and records that they release on their own labels. As I said, I am fortunate because Defected Records was successful and I travel / dj as a result of the profile that this creates but making music is really important.

I have x4 pieces of advice:

1. always be yourself, try not to let success go to your head and play music that it true to your heart.
2. practice, practice, practice....never think you are the best or that you know it all.
3. learn to play a keyboard. This will give you a huge advantage when making records.
4. make sure you study hard at school. Djing is a really cool thing but you need to pass your exams just in case things do not work out as well as you hope.

I hope that you stick with your love of playing music and making people dance, it really connects you to people and makes them happy.

I hope to see you behind the decks at Pacha one day.

Simon Dunmore

Good luck Miles!
