Epitomising the very best of their hometown’s unparalleled musical heritage, Detroit’s Dames Brown are the vocal trio you may not yet know by name, but are sure to know by voice. Athena Johnson, Teresa Marbury and LaRae Starr now reveal ‘What Would You Do?’, the first standalone single from their debut album coming out on Defected on 12th November, showcasing the trio front and centre.
Produced by long-time collaborator of the group and fellow Motor City native Amp Fiddler and Mahogani Music regular Andrés, this slick, funk-filled and typically soulful release has already caught the attention of esteemed selectors like Natasha Diggs and Louie Vega. A record that captures funk, house and soul from across the spectrum, Amp and Andrés’ production muscle pushes the musical boundaries with fitting tenacity for the Dames’ vocal delivery. A powerful combination of Detroit’s finest, ‘What Would You Do?’ makes a fitting first release to represent Dames Brown’s diverse musicality, with exquisite production, striking song-writing and a hefty dose of house authenticity working together to create a future classic.
"When they sent me 'What Would You Do?' I couldn’t stop listening to it. The Dames and Amp brought the energy on this song and Dez [Andrés] flipped the sickest sample and did his thing on the MPC. Just a few bars of drums were added on the intro for the DJs, and we left it as is. Between the five of them and what they created, I knew this was special." - Adrienne Bookbinder, Defected Records, A&R Manager
Dames Brown are no strangers to the extended Defected family lending their exquisite range to a number of modern house essentials, including Sophie Lloyd’s ‘Calling Out’ on Classic, The Vision featuring Andreya Triana ‘Heaven’ and David Penn’s ‘Nobody’ in recent years as well as joining the Glitterbox crew back in 2018 performing at two shows and appearing at Defected Croatia 2019. We can't wait to continue working with the trio and are excited for what's to come...
