This week, one of the Ibiza season's biggest tracks is unleashed on Subliminal. 'I Get Lifted' has been ripping dancefloors to shreds across the island and beyond, and nowhere is this more apparent than at Subliminal Sessions at Pacha every Wednesday. We caught up with Mr. Subliminal and the man behind the track Erick Morillo to get the lowdown...
Tell us how ‘I Get Lifted’ came about...
Well it was me and Jimmy Hester who works with Deborah Cooper who came up with the idea. I’ve known her for many, many years from back in the scene, and we’d been talking about doing a project together and he approached me about doing a record with her. I’ve always been a big fan of Deborah's, I mean 'Pride' and 'Deeper Love' are one of my favourite all time dance records, and I jumped at the chance. We met up and hit it off, and between Jimmy, Deborah and myself we sat down in the studio and wrote a song about something that she had been going through and something we all had been discussing in the studio. Lyrically, I love what the song is saying because it’s all about being down when people are always jealous and trying to keep you down, but you have to let all that go and just live a happy life.
What has the reaction been like when you’ve played it out?
It’s been really phenomenal. Originally I was just playing out my dub and vocal mix, but now we’ve had some re-mixes done. The ones from Michael Grey and Danism especially are the mixes I’ve been playing over the last month or so and it’s really been tearing the clubs up, especially here in Ibiza on Wednesdays. It’s definitely one of my big records this summer. It’s soulful, yet it’s got a real progressive energy and so it definitely touches on a lot of the different genres of dance.
What made you want to get Michael Grey and Danism to remix it?
I’ve always been a big fan of Michael Grey, I love the way he’s able to work with a vocal and work around a vocal and still make it sound tough. So I’m a big fan, and I’m really happy with what they did to the point where I actually have them working on my new Ministers De La Funk record which I did with Harry [Romero] and Jose [Nunez] featuring Duane Harden, so I’m hoping he can deliver another powerhouse tune.
This is already one of the big tunes of the summer. What other tracks have caught your attention recently?
I think the one by the Swedes ‘Leave the World Behind’ is definitely one of the big records I’ve heard this summer. Obviously Michael Grey’s ‘Say Yes’ is also a big record to hear this summer, so those would be my picks right now.
