For the last couple of weeks, Jelena has been bringing us stories and recommendations about some of Ibiza’s more tranquil treasures, and jolly nice it’s been too. This week however, it’s back to what Ibiza is (in)famous for…
Right, a wee bit of beach time and nice restaurants is absolute perfection, don’t get me wrong, but what we’re really here for is to listen to amazing music and P.A.R.T.Y.!!!
Defected was absolutely smashing last Saturday! For me, a perfect sign that a party is truly rocking is spotting glow sticks, even more so when they’re being shimmied around to the sounds of David Morales’ stone-cold house music anthems! And you know it’s all gone bonkers when Whitney Houston is getting some love on a rammed the Main Room dance floor (sorry Mr. Morales, I would have loved to write that you were a pioneer in dropping a W-bomb, but the prize for this antic most definitely goes to Ricardo Villalobos who did that with ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ at Cocoon just a couple of weeks back). Junior Jack and Kid Crème alongside their infamous MC Shurakano had the club packed right up until closing time and before you knew it “One more tune!” was echoing through a completely lit Pacha at 7am – a perfect ending to a great night.
Off to bed I was, as I was on a tight schedule. I had to be up by 2pm to meet the boys on their way to the airport and then make my way to the San Antonio waterfront where the Ibiza 123 Rocktronic festival was already underway, and for which I still didn’t have my press passes for the three days. I was not happy! Imagine an urban festival ground, with no vehicle access as the surrounding streets have been blocked, all the other streets jammed with traffic… and me being sent from one door to another. Hung over. In 39 degree scorchio heat. Got you in the mood yet?
Two hours later, I was apparently at the right door and just had to wait for another little bit for a press liaison to arrive with my envelope. ‘Mega yay’ is what I screamed with the three beautiful stickers in hand as I was heading to my car in desperate need of shade, a drink of water, and a nap before the European Footy Final.. it was then time to get ‘stung’ at one of the most beautiful festival grounds in the entire world.
If you’ve ever been in San An, you know that there are very few places around the globe that beat a San Antonio sunset. Well, now imagine that sunset being a backdrop to one of the most spectacular stages you’ve ever seen, with the entire festival ground located on a gentle slant so that everyone there has a perfect view of the stage, the sea, and the sun/moon… What else could you want, right?
Sting was amazing! Simple, charming, no bollocks… just amazing! And the crowd was there to celebrate! To celebrate life, music, and Spain winning the Euro 2012, about which Sting gave a shout out in flawless Spanish (to everyone’s mild amazement). After Sting and Police hits galore, it was time for a small break courtesy of Pacha’s own Andy Baxter as the stage was being transformed from Rock to Tronic. Next up was David Guetta who boastes the most impressive production I’ve seen in a while. A perfect medley of visuals, lasers, pyrotechnics and confetti made his set even more impressive for everyone. I didn’t make it to Tiesto’s closing set as it was then very close to 2am and I just had to be at We Love… at Space for Groove Armada’s set at 3am!
Space was surprisingly packed, bearing in mind what was going on the other side of the island. The GA boys had the Terrace thrilled and dancing during the entire hour and a half and got the floor perfect for Jooris Voorn’s closing frolics, but I had to go. A work day ahead of me, blog entry to be submitted and another smashing Ibiza 123 day ahead with the likes of Tinie Tempah, 2ManyDjs, Fatboy Slim, Steve Angello, and of course – Sir Elton John vs. PNAU!!
Be back next week with how it all went down, together with the Festival final day’s big one – Lenny Kravitz vs. Luciano, Carl Cox Opening, Richie Hawtin’s Enter at Kehakuma, and MK and 2000 and one doing their debuts for Defected in Ibiza. Do you think I should swing a three day off proposal by Simon Dunmore to catch up on sleep? Yeah right, too much good stuff happening here for that!
Till then,
Jelena XX
