Having DJd for some time in his native Italy, Andrew Soul turned his hand to production a few years back and promptly set about making some of the most emotive and engaging analogue house and techno around. Citing artists like DJ Koze, Martin Buttrich, Mark Henning as influences is a potentially hazardous undertaking as your own productions will inevitably be held up against theirs, but Soul’s hearty basslines and dusty synths bear healthy comparison to many of his peers considerably more experienced than he.

Fittingly, his In Their House mix flits between the classic and the current, but never strays far from the analogue warmth he so steadfastly champions.

What first got you into electronic music?

I started to feel the need to produce something of mine when, behind the decks, the music of others artists was enough anymore. I felt the need to transform into music what goes through my head and share with people those are my ideas. To see people who like the music that you create is totally different from seeing people jumping to a record that you have simply played. You know that producing is the right way to go when you wake up in the morning with a bassline or a groove already in your head.

What is it about house and techno that appeals to you?

I can't survive a day without listening to house or techno. It’s a good feeling when you put on your headset and feel locked into your own world. I think the best thing is that each track has many different faces and there are so many thousands of new tracks every day that we can never get bored.

You’re a champion of analogue gear and production… do you see any merit in digital production?

Nowadays music production is made easier than in the past by all the programs and plug-ins that we may have on our laptops. Today, I think digital production is the beginning of the path in electronic music. Then, with the experience, I think that it's better to make music with analogue machine.

Which other artists are you currently feeling? Are there any you try to emulate in your own records?

The artists that I follow above all else are KiNK and Carl Craig. I love their old production, listen to their music every day and I try to take ideas from them. Other modern artists that I like are Juju & Jordash, Snuff Crew, Axel Boman.

How and where was the mix recorded?

This mix was recorded in my studio, using Traktor and some old vinyls and CDs.

Any records on there you’d particularly like to highlight?

Snuff Crew - Rumble303. I really like the mix comes from 707 and the acid bassline. Nico Lahs - In The Air; an unreleased track of my best friend Nico, maybe my fav ever, bassline, chord, pad, his synth and vocal comes from Nico. Really makes me dream when I close my eyes. I have to listen it at least once a day at the moment.

What have you go going on in the next few months?

I've two releases on the way: "Stream Of Consciousness" EP on Tenth Circle, and an upcoming release on Safari Numerique with David Labeji remix. I'm also working on my first album with my best friend/singer Klaudia. Other important things can come really soon, but it are not signed and I can't say.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about..?

I want to say thanks to my crew (Nico Lahs, Francys, Peter JD and Frank Naht) because they always believed in me and they helped me a lot during the years. Other thanks for their patience goes to my love Dalila and my singer Klaudia.
