A relative newcomer to the production game, jozif’s breakthrough year was undoubtedly in 2010, when releases on Wolf + Lamb, Vitalik and Fist or Finger and an end of year podcast for Resident Advisor saw his star rise sharply. That year also saw the launch of Fist or Finger; jozif’s limited edition vinyl only label alongside fabric musical director and long time buddy Craig Richards, featuring jozif's dance floor A side’s and Craig's experimental reinterpretations on the flip.
More recently, jozif has added to his already impressive list of labels with production and remixes on InFine, My Favourite Robot, Compost, No.19, Future Classic, Mobilee and recently became the monthly resident DJ for John Digweed’s seminal Bedrock night, promoting him from the ‘one to watch’ category to that of one of the most exciting artists in house music.
In Their House #19 - jozif by Defected Records
How are you on this fine spring day?
I’m super duper thank you - enjoying the sun - although there are no windows in my little studio so I have to keep popping out to remind myself hehehe!
How was Miami? You played at Treehouse and Electric Pickle right? Any other exciting things you can tell us about?
Yeah I did Treehouse with Leftroom and Culprit which was really good - sooo many good sets that night. Then we did a little boat party for Mr Digweed which was – as I'm sure you can imagine – fantastic. Super posh boat with loads of free fresh fruit, a yummy buffet and importantly...Tequila! Nick Warren played the first set and was sublime, a perfect sunshine early doors set of gorgeous deep, sexy slow vibes. Then it was off to Get Lost where I Got Lost about 7 times… hehe!
The last one I did was a boat party for the listed guys called Ship of Fools which, previously I couldn't really work out why it was so called… until I realized it was at 6am on Monday morning... then it all became clear!
You’re quite a prolific producer – I counted close to 20 original tracks and remixes last year, all of which we very well received. How do you maintain such a steady output?
I'm not sure I’m prolific but the thing with me is that absolutely love writing music… always have. I’m totally addicted to it so I’m constantly sat in my little studio fiddling around with sound.
Who is Lady B?
You'll know when you see her :)
How and where was the mix recorded?
It was just recorded in my little studio in Dalston, East London
Any particular tracks you’d like to highlight?
Well, Ada ‘Forty Winks’ is something that touches me every time as does the sublime Steffi track, ‘Sadness’. Played it Miami and (quite embarrassingly) it brought me to tears in front of everyone (ooops!!)
What else have you got going on over the next few months?
Well, I have done another EP for Culprit which is a more obvious, straight dance EP called The Guitar Player. It’s pretty simple but done just for the dancefloor. Then I have my first release on Crosstown and maybe a remix or two...
I’m back off the States at the end of May for another little tour there and of course then it’s summer time so I’ll be back at Sonar and the always wonderful We Love @ Space.
Anything else you’d like to tell us about?
