Described by Mixmag as "one of the UK's best-kept secrets", Paul Loraine first dived into the murky waters of house production back in 2008. Since then he's enjoyed a spectacular string of releases on an array of respected imprints like Vitalik, Four:Twenty and My Favourite Robot.
How are you?
I'm great thanks.
Been up to anything interesting recently?
I have yes, just had a week off from music (apart from a midweek gig at Macarena Microclub) and spent it travelling both North and South of Barcelona. Sun, sea, and a few other things too … GOOD TIMES!
How and where was the mix put together?
The mix was put together using Traktor with turntables at my home in Barcelona.
Any particular tracks on there you’d like to highlight?
I'm a huge fan of the new Bobby Womack album, if you haven't checked it out, do yourself a favour and get on it! I heard the Julio Bashmore remix of ‘Love is Gonna Lift You Up’ on Giles Peterson's BB6 show last Sunday and was blown away by it. Also ‘Hooker's Revenge’ has been getting fantastic floor reactions every time I drop it, which is one of the tracks on my new EP on Tenth Circle.
Why did you decide to move to Barcelona? Has it affected your music, either in the style you make or the way you produce it?
I decided to move to Barcelona because I wanted to live in a country where is was sunny 95% of the year. Since I have been here it has affected my music, of course. I would say my productions have become a lot more dance floor friendly the past year or so and a touch more melodic.
How do you try and make yourself stand out as a producer, given the amount of competition?
I'm honest with myself, I stick to my guns in what I do. I know that my music is sometime not that suited to dancing in clubs but more geared towards listening in the comfort of your home or a car etc. I write music with feeling, music that will have a long lasting impression not just a dance hit for 8 weeks and then it disappears into the abyss like 99.9% of electronic music and artists today.
You recently played Sonar… tell us about the experience…
Sonar is a very special event, the atmosphere, the people, the weather all adds to making it one of the best events in the busy yearly music calendar, very excited to see what happens in 2013.
Anything else you’d like to tell us about?
Yeah I had the honour of opening up the very first official Piknic Electronik Barcelona with Fairmont and James Holden. Piknic has been running in Montreal (Canada) for 13 years and has now spread its wings to Europe. I can say without a doubt that will always be one of the most emotional and memorable five hours sets I will play in my life and I think the 3,500 people there would agree it was a very special day indeed.
