Mone, is a singer, songwriter and producer who has been singing all her life. Like many of her contemporaries she grew up singing in church with a background in gospel music.  She released two tracks on Strictly Rhythm back in the 90’s; ‘We Can Make It’ and ‘Movin’’ which reached #1 and #2 respectively on the US Billboard Dance Charts. Since then she has had several other releases on other labels around the world and now, once again she’s back on the biggest US house label in the world.

Her new single ‘Love Don’t Pay the Rent’ drops next week, so we caught up with the larger than life character to find out about the inspiration for the track and to hear a few home truths…

Tell us about your new track ‘Love Don’t Pay the Rent’…did the inspiration come from personal experience?

Absolutely! Miami producer Giovanni Scaccia, my manager Shaun DeSouza & I wrote this together. We all went through similar experiences in the past with deadbeat, lazy, unemployed significant others who just wanted to sit around the house all day, unemployed, with every excuse in the book for why they weren’t working. Every man and woman on this planet knows someone like this. They’re always ‘looking’ for work but “nobody’s hiring”. You know, it’s a little difficult to find a job when you don’t even wake up until 3:00 in the afternoon and the last interview you had was at the food stamp office! Their favorite line is, “You know I love you baby, I’ll get a job soon.” Well guess what…… Love don’t pay the rent!  Revenge is sweet but writing a song and having that person hear it over and over again is vindication! This song was written to empower everyone to kick those no good, lazy players to the curb. And by the way, if this song was written ‘about’ you….GET A JOB!!!

You’re probably best known for your incredible voice, but did you produce this track as well?

Thank you very much for saying my voice is incredible, it means a lot to me, I really mean that. Yes, I did produce this track. I wrote the original music for the track and produced the melody and vocal arrangement as well. The lyrics were written by my manager Shaun, Miami producer Giovanni Scaccia and by myself.

What else have you got in the pipeline for the rest of the year?

I have quite a bit in the pipeline for the rest of the year; I have a problem stopping, so I keep working. I am always writing, I am currently working with Craig C, Debonaire and Giovanni Scaccia on a new track, and I recently finished a track with ATFC called 'I Promise'; it sounds smashing. Both tracks are amazing but I really can’t tell you much more or you know, I will have to kill you, hehehe.

Who have been your stand-out artists recently? Who should we be keeping an out eye out for?

I absolutely love DJ Meme, Craig C and ATFC. Gio from Techtoniks is one to watch for sure, I feel he is cutting edge and on his way up. Lady Gaga is one of my favorite female artists right now, she is wild and unpredictable.

What do you do when you’re not making music?

I like to read, I love to go shopping, and I also like to travel. I live about 2 hours from the California coastline so I like to drive to the coast and spend the day at the beach every time I get a chance. Oh, I spend a lot of time talking too! My nickname growing up was motor-mouth and believe me, I have earned that nickname 100%!

Anything else you’d like to tell us about?

Yes, as a matter of fact there is, I’m glad you asked. I want every man, woman, boy and girl to know that standing on the street corner with a sign that says, “Will Work For Food” is NOT considered working. Sitting on the couch in your underwear playing video games is not now, nor will it ever be considered ‘looking for a job’, so go out and get a J. O. B., and I mean A. S. A. P.!!!

Love Don’t Pay the Rent is out 5th May on Strictly Rhythm
