Ahead of the release of Most Rated Miami 2013, selector Andy Daniell talks us through some of his favourite inclusions on the compilation.
Chicken Lips – He Not In (Eats Everything’s Chicken Tits Rewix)
The original version of Chicken Lips classic ‘He Not In’ is over 10 years old but it couldn’t sound more relevant today if it tried. Its one of those records that everyone recognises; even if you're not aware of its name or who wrote it, the bassline is an enduring sound in dance music that everyone knows, and pretty much everyone loves.Taking on a record like this is a big job so it took a big man to do it. Mr Eats Everything recreated the track in his own special style & this is the awesome result. He sticks close to the structure of the original but has jacked the beats and bass up to maximum capacity for an explosive, peak-time deep houser. And anyone who calls a track “Chicken Tits Rewix” is alright by me!
Scuba – Hardbody
I’m a big fan of Scuba and I think his releases on his Hotflush imprint are superb. ‘Hardbody’ is another example of what he does best. With its exceptional production, rib rattling bass line and precise arrangement it has the capacity to simply destroy a dance floor. The fact that this underground and instrumental record hit the Radio 1 playlist says it all about the quality of the track.
Rachel Row – Follow The Step (KiNK Beat Mix)
This is definitely a Miami anthem in the making. Since its first release it has been getting widespread support from DJ’s from all styles of dance music. KiNK takes Rachel's softer original version and works the vocal to perfection and adds an incredible riff that sounds like nothing else out there. It’s huge record and instantly recognizable.
Flashmob ft Laila Walker – Pieces (Garage Mix)
Flashmob are a really exciting act. Just when you thought you knew what you were going to get from the Italian duo, they switch it up completely, stamping their mark of quality and proving their versatility as producers. They conquered Ibiza last year with their massive ‘Need In Me’,and they have shown real progression in their sound with ‘Pieces’. An awesome spoken word female vocal, a massive bass line and that twist of acid make it an unquestionable underground anthem. Look out for the limited vinyl run of this as well.
&ME, Nomi Ruiz & Rampa – Enemy
I’m a huge, huge fan of this record and the entire Keinemusik crew. They make music that sounds like no-one else at the moment in my opinion. Here &ME and Rampa team up with New York based singer Nomi Ruiz and they’ve made something really special. It’s a perfect example of a track that sits firmly in the underground whilst not being afraid of a vocal. A totally essential record in my view.
Johnny Corporate – Sunday Shoutin’ (Robosonic Rework)
I’ve been speaking with the Robosonic guys for a while as I’m a big fan of their work and we talked about wanting them to remix an older record from the catalogue. When they asked if they could remix ‘Sunday Shoutin’ I was really excited and I think they did a superb job. They very much made it their own, not an easy task with a record as recognizable as this.
Waze and Odyssey – Be Right There
The Waze and Odyssey guys have been, if you’ll excuse the pun, making waves of late and this record is a great example of why. They are talented at making very modern, sonic sounding records which at the same time, give a knowing nod to the 90’s house sound and it’s pioneers. The fact that it’s got the golden seal of approval having been released on Kerri Chandle’rs label says it all. And this track is no exception. I love the arrangement of nostalgic vocals, gentle samples, warm melodies and determined drum punches, and the way this track builds slowly lulling in and out until gently climaxing and fading out. It sounds superb out as well.
wAFF – Ibiza
Waff is definitely one to watch. He’s been consistently putting out very strong underground club records for a while now and has been heavily endorsed by the Hot Creations crew and Dennis Ferrer amongst others. This is a record for the clubs with that massive throbbing bass and trippy vocal sample that just get under your skin. I love this track.
KORT – No Fear
KORT are an act that are really stepping up their game at the moment.’ No Fear’, their deepest cut to date. It sounds like Groove Armada meets Dirty Bird in the best possible way. The organ lead hook is infectious and the rumbling bassline and timeless vocal make it a real secret weapon for spinning out as well. People may not know it by name yet, but they always react and the floor goes crazy. An essential tune.
Sante – Bad Decision
There is something I love about the warmth of Sante’s records. Sonically speaking, the bass and drums are always perfect. This record just rolls along with such a good groove and feel to it. Much like the KORT record, there is something about this track that just gets under your skin and you just can’t help but moving your feet when you hear it.
