Innovative gutter house set-up Night Slugs – originated by London DJ-producers Bok Bok and L Vis 1990 – has finally revealed the criteria for releasing music under its cult ‘n’ clandestine Club Constructions banner. And invited the general public to have a go and contribute.
The EP series – including cuts by Helix, Lil Silva, Jam City and L-Vis 1990 - launched back in 2012, complimenting Night Slugs’ main releases whilst maintaining the set-up’s infamous air of secrecy. Several contributors have previously hinted at a set of guidelines given to them before recording for the series but nothing has ever been confirmed, until now.
“Night Slugs has until now been something of a closed circle” an official statement, released this week, starts. “But we are opening up in the name of community, something we feel is lacking from our increasingly partisan [sic] music scene. We are doing this by publishing the criteria for what makes a Club Construction, and making an open invitation to contribute.
“Club music is our foundation. We want to start a structured dialog, encourage and support new talent, connect with like-minded producers, and cultivate a platform for this emerging sound.”
Night Slugs’ newly-proposed Club Construction ‘Community will pivot on the http://ccc.nightslugs.net/ website, where anyone can check out Bok Bok and L Vis 1990’s recording guidelines, before creating their own raw club cuts and submitting them to a specially allocated Dropbox.
“This is not a contest or a PR stunt” Night Slugs’ statement continues. “This is a genuine reaction to the way the CC series has developed, the music around us and the demos we receive. This is an attempt to share some of the label’s culture.”
Whilst the Club Construction Community is welcoming new demos as we speak, it has not yet been confirmed if those demos will generate EPs, albums, long-term label contracts or simply the exchange of ideas between a growing fanbase. Night Slugs view the project as “open-ended” and will make further decisions about it in the coming months.
