There comes a time when certain genres of music become so universal that sub genres begin to appear. This can take a while, sometimes decades, but ultimately it is the greatest compliment a genre can receive. In doing so they experience a renaissance; take the example of Jazz, which got developed its own sub-genre ‘Nu Jazz’ in the 90’s, when other musical styles started to incorporate jazz elements.
More recently it happened to our beloved 70’s and 80’s Disco, which attracted renewed interest from the musical movement of the 00’s. It got a spanking 21st century moniker with disco tracks re-edited, remixed and presented to a whole new generation and suddenly ‘Nu Disco’ was born. The name stuck, quickly adopted by DJs, producers, clubbers and the media alike and the newest sub-genre of dance music was born.
Now it’s the turn of house music. In much the same way as the other genres of music have been tagged, House music is constantly blended and mashed in with a multitude of other genres and influences to create another sub-genre; Nu House.
It can be described as house blended with a many different influences and flavours from soul, funk, disco, boogie and every other respectable genre to give us a whole new entity.
It’s a genre epitomised by the new mix. With soul, funk and boogie influenced tracks from Reboot ‘Enjoy Music’ (Crazy P Remix) to Tensnake’s phenomenal ‘Coma Cat’ set to be THE festival anthem of the summer. Add to the mix cuts like Rasmus Faber & Alf Tumble ‘Wilder Side’ (Alf Tumble Remix) which features the vocals of disco and soul diva Candi Staton and you have a carefully considered blend of the sound that’s taking over clubs and bars around the world.
