Defected intern Keelan Doyle reports on a 4-week Point Blank Online production course.
Developed with TLC by Point Blank's own Danny J Lewis, the Deep & Soulful House course last 4 weeks and covers everything you need to know about creating your own track, from Programming and quantizing your beats and creating analogue percussion to classic deep House chord structures and layering backing Vocals.
Defected Record’s intern Keelan Dolye is currently taking the course and will be keeping an online diary of his progress through the course, and at the end of the course we’ll be showing you the track he made.
Here’s the first week’s entry:
Lesson 1 focused on the basics as well as a bit of history; Origins, Legends and Beatmaking. The sections were broken down simply in a way that wasn’t too overwhelming to look at, which was really helpful, and each section has a tutorial video to go with it which is great. There are really well explained and there is even an option to download the project used in the video as an example.
The first week covered loads of really useful sub-section; including how to emulate some of your favourite producers with drums sounds you made or chose. The first assignment was building a kit in Ultrabeat, which I was very happy with.
The good thing about the course is that I can access it at any computer anywhere I am with my own user name and password, to revise the notes, interact with fellow students and put forward any questions I have to Alex (the course tutor). Each week there’s also an online discussion with everyone on the course, which was really helpful as you can exactly what Alex was demonstrating on his screen
Next week I will be looking at Percussion & Sounds, as well as at programming keys and creating washes to add texture and drama to the track.
