Original superstar DJ-producer Sasha has sensationally spoken out against EDM music, Tweeting this weekend that “most EDM is made by douchebags for douchebags. Do i care if lots of douchebags buy it? Not really, But it pollutes.”
EDM is the big, brash, pop-driven house sound that has taken mainstream America by storm over the past 18 months and started to compete alongside the country’s two biggest musical scenes – urban and rock. Spearheaded by (former) urban giants Rihanna, Usher and Will.i.am, EDM is showing no signs of dissipating.
Sasha’s provocative comments (his first comments on EDM) came as club magazine Mixmag launched its Great EDM Debate’ campaign on Saturday, encouraging DJs and fans alike to give their views on what is one of the dance scene’s biggest developments in years. In turn, there have been several heated exchanges between participants, with several DJs and producers calling for calm. Dimitri Vegas posted: “I suggest spending the energy of hating on each other into creative work! So we wouldn’t need to be having this discussion all together” and Mat Zo said “there’s nothing new about the wave of pop-dance and the battle of old and young”.
Justin ‘Lionrock’ Robertson commented on Twitter: “The #EDM debate is so entertaining, people are blowing gaskets right left and centre.” The Chemical Brothers’ Ed Simons philosophically added (to suggestions that EDM would help fan the flames of underground invention): “big wheel keeps on turning.”
Elsewhere, Dimitri From Paris Tweeted: “SNATCH street culture at maturation, RIP its guts out, stuff it w/FLUFF & cash, BUY some of its fathers, REBRAND & SELL as nu #EDM.” But Felix Da Housecat responded to critics, typing: “Who Cares...Shut up and Dance!”
The debate rages on....
