A feel-good anthem for multiple music-loving generations, few songs capture both the inherent glamour and reckless abandon of the disco era like Sister Sledge’s ‘Lost In Music’. From the opening guitar-led bars to the rallying cry of its title, ‘Lost In Music’ endures where many have faded: a shining gem in disco’s history, and one that has unquestionably stood the test of time.
Although Sister Sledge initially formed in 1971, it would be nearly a decade and two albums later before they really hit their creative stride. Towards the end of the 1970’s the group’s record label Atlantic Records connected them with producers Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of the band Chic for what was to be their most critically acclaimed and commercially successful album, We Are Family. Following its release along with lead singles ‘He’s The Greatest Dancer’ and ‘We Are Family’ the group and album were nominated for Grammys, with Sister Sledge also named as Billboard’s ‘Best New Artist’.
The third single from We Are Family, ‘Lost In Music’ hit the UK top 20 on three separate occasions – and in three decades – in 1979, 1984 and 1993, and remains a source of inspiration to many music producers to this day.
Despite it being released after disco’s heyday had been and gone – and arguably at the peak of public disillusionment with the genre, ‘Lost In Music’ perfectly captures the defiantly hedonistic spirit of disco like few other records have managed.
“I was offered to pick five Chic productions to remix” says Dimitri From Paris. “I chose in priority the ones that were either never given the club remix treatment, or that if they were, I wasn't overwhelmed with the results.
“There was one remix done in the 80s of ‘Lost In Music’ which was I felt a little too suffering from the era's gimmicks, which seemed to go against its original spirit. My goal was to resuscitate its full Disco glory, and make it sound just modern enough to fit within today’s dancefloors.”
Setting the tone of Dimitri From Paris In The House of Disco from the off, Dimitri opens CD1 of the mix with his own remix of ‘Lost In Music’, a club-ready interpretation of one of the greatest disco records ever recorded.
