The Sound of Soul Heaven Records is released this week, so we thought it would be a good idea to get a little more detail on some of the selections. Here’s Aaron Ross to talk us through all the of the tracks he included in his mix…
1. Jus’Dope ‘Roots’
A great deep percussive track to get the mix started...This was part of an EP from a very talented Parisian producer Nadir.
2. Liquid People ‘Son Of Dragon’ (Aaron Ross 2010 Re-Fix)
One of my favourite signings to Soul Heaven records – such a simple track in its original form...And I just had to have a mess around with it! I guess this is somewhere between a re-edit and a remix – I didn’t actually change the arrangement I just added parts – new drums and percussion and a bassline from Mood II Swing legend Lem Springsteen.
3. Three Kings featuring Jaygun & Bashy ‘Shake Dat Booty’ (Alix Alvarez SOLE Channel Mix)
Another great release on soul heaven from back in the day, the original (produced by Pal Joey) had actually already been out for a while, we felt it had legs to go a bit further so we picked it up and got Alix to do his thing with it and it came out slaaaamin...
4. Peven Everett ‘Stuck’ (Phil Asher's Soul Heaven Version)
One of my proudest signings and the record that launched the label, a soulful classic with a tight edit from phil asher...
5. Soul Central ‘In-Ten-City’ (Aaron Ross 2010 Deep Dub)
Another solid record from the back cat, there’s a dope little techy, arpegiatted sound towards the end of the main mix, I was messing around with an edit and I looped up that part as and then as the breakdown was made up of that musical part it was all without drums so I added new beats and worked an arrangement around that techy part. It totally changes the energy of the record and hopefully opens it up to the DJ.s who play that deeper techy sound.
6. Kerri Chandler Oblivion (Original Mix)
One of the true masters of house – trademark Chandler...Also love what he’s talking about in the vocals.. It’s all about people in the scene getting a little bit too big for their boots and getting lost in the oblivion!
7. Druw & Perez featuring Don-E ‘Bonafide’ (Mood II Swing Mix)
A killer vocal from one of London’s finest soul singers Don-E... And I got John Ciafone and Lem Springsteen out of retirement for this remix which they absolutely smasshed...
8. Wookie featuring Lain ‘Live On’ (Mark Grant’s Blackstone Remix)
A pioneer or the UK garage scene turned his hand to house and did it with style and proved that he was just a good producer, no matter what the genre... I actually used the mark grant remix... He’ an old school chicago cat with a unique bump to his productions and remixes...And Lain, another one of the UK’s finest male soul voices.. !
9. Roland Clark ‘God Is Good’ (DJ Spen Main Mix)
Roland and Spen.... A simple groove based track that just works! A little disco loop in there that fits nice and snug in that groove.
10. The MuthaFunkaz feat. Marc Evans ‘I Don't Want You Anymore’ (Dub)
The second release from Marc and Spen after the soulful smash the way you love me. The dub on this kinda went a little un-noticed at the time of release as everyone went for the vocal.. But the dub is slaaaming!
11. Sterling Ensemble feat. Delouie Avant ‘Follow Me’ (Fanatix Vocal Bounce)
A remix that me and Neil did of our good friend Albert Menendez’s production – sweet vocals from Delouie Avant too – if you check the beginning of the remix you’ll hear a little out take that we got with the vocal parts it’s Delouie on the phone to his mum it’s a nice little touch.
12. Gary Bardouille Starting Over (Aaron's Stripped Down Church Edit)
I did this edit back when the record came out... It’s a straight up contemporary soulful house jam that ticks all the boxes...
13. Peven Everett ‘Sexy Make Up’ (Tarantulaz Remix)
The only artist to appear twice on the mix, the unique song writing and performing skills of Peven Everett shine through once again. And what Tarantulaz did with the mix is crazy considering they didn’t have parts and did the mix only using the original version!!
