Hailing from the Austurias region of Northern Spain, David Herrero’s career got off to a good – some would say excellent – start when he became resident of the world’s biggest club Privilege at just 20 years of age. Sharing the booth with the crème de la crème of the world’s DJ fraternity, the young David dreamed of superstardom and global recognition, something he is now starting to achieve.

Following acclaimed released on labels like DJ Chus’s Stereo Productions and Steve Lawler’s Viva Music, David has just dropped his first EP on Defected. We caught up with him to discuss the single, his production style and why he never stops working…

What were some of the highlights of 2010 for you?

2010 has been a great year for me, but I hope that 2011 is even better. I think that I have to keep improving and working hard. This year some of my dreams have come true and I've received recognition from big artists all around the world, so I truly believe that all this hard work will continue to pay off in the near future.

What were you doing on the stroke of midnight, New Year’s Eve?

Working, as usual (I just can't stop). In fact I was finishing one of Copyright's remixes featuring Shovel ‘Bulo’ and I also played for few hours in one of my clubs.

For those who don’t know you, how would you describe the music you make?

I think that my music is very dancy and easy to listen to house, with a lot of groove. I love US and classic house and when I produce I look for that sort of sound mixed with some of today's influences. I also love percussion, which is also a big influence in all my productions.

Tell us about the new EP on Defected…

It's my first work as a single artist with Defected and to be honest I've incorporate all the styles that I talked about in the previous question; that US and classic flavour with up to date house sounds. I really just identify with this kind of music as I'm a truly fan of this style. This has been one of my life dreams, that fortunately came true this year. I hope that the feedback is as enthusiastic as all the energy I put into it.

You also have a remix coming out on David Penn’s Urbana Recordings, is this as busy as you’ve been, production-wise?

Yes indeed, in 2011 I have a lot of projects coming up with Urbana. In the forthcoming weeks there's a new remix coming out and then for the WMC there'll be another remix for the track ‘Scream For Love’ and an original work co-produced with Rober Gaez, an artist I have a lot of projects with for this year. Honestly 2011 will be as busy as 2010. (see, always working...)

What goals have you set yourself for 2011?

I'd like to keep the same working philosophy but spend more time on each track and be more selective when I accept production requests. I will also try to get closer to the scene and reach out to the street clubbers.

Who do you see as the most exciting producers around at the moment?

I think that David Penn is one of today’s greatest artists, as well as a close friend and colleague, but also I think that Supernova is doing great things right now.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about…?

I have works to be released for A Night Club Productions with upcoming artists and also collaborations with artists like DJ Chus, DJ PP, Christian Dehugo, Crocodiles and Rob Mirage. I also have a gig at Pacha Ibiza on February 4th which I’m really excited about.
