Brooklyn’s house ‘n’ hip-hop guru DJ Spinna and Macclesfield lad Mr Scruff – self-described ‘DJ, producer, cartoonist and tea drinker’ – have mixed a 9th double-disc instalment of the popular Southport Weekender compilation series.
Both CDs ooze soulful diversity and quality, zipping dextrously between the genres of house, hip-hop, funk, soul, pop and Northern Soul. Scruff works in tracks by Theo Parrish, Kerri Chandler, Moodymann and 70s funkster Chet Ivey, whilst Spinna plumps for contributions from Reel People, Atjazz and Central African Republic-born house talent Boddhi Satva.
The full album is released via London’s Miroma Music label on February 6, 2012, preceded by an unmixed iTunes download exclusive December 11. It is based, of course, on legendary bi-annual festival the Southport Weekender, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in May – the UK event actually moved to Butlins’ Minehead, Somerset holiday resort earlier this year after long-standing Southport base Pontins announced receivership.
