This summer, 2025, Ukrainian duo ARTBAT delivered their take on the definitive Defected staple from 2017, CamelPhat and Elderbrook’s ‘Cola’.

From recent originals with Vintage Culture, Benny Benassi and Armand van Buuren, to remixes for artists like Empire Of The Sun, The Chemical Brothers and MEDUZA, ARTBAT’s arena filling house and techno rollers have made them one of Ukraine’s most notable electronic artists of the decade.

“We made one of our most iconic tracks, ‘For A Feeling,’ with CamelPhat and also remixed ‘Hypercolour’ for them. We are friends with them and love their music, ‘Cola’ is a classic. This summer, we wanted to reimagine ‘Cola’ for the dance floor and give it our spin.” – ARTBAT

"I love ARTBAT. So glad there’s a new version of ‘Cola’ matching the vibes of the original but definitely hitting harder”Elderbrook

After changing the sound of clubbing here in the UK, the OG ‘Cola’ soared to the top of dance charts worldwide upon release, before receiving a nomination for Best Dance Recording at the 2018 GRAMMY Awards.

As ARTBAT’s remix now climbs the Beatport chart, the wickedly subversive original remains a favourite of dance music lovers today. Read on for the story of how ‘Cola’ came to be…

By February 2018, we were thrilled to announce that CamelPhat & Elderbrook’s 'Cola' had gone Gold in the OCC - equivalent to 400,000 sales in the UK alone.

The record was already certified Gold or higher in six other global territories. Since being released in June 2017 it became undoubtedly the biggest and most addictive record of the summer, dominating in Ibiza and becoming a defining musical moment of the year.

The track occupied the UK chart for over 20 weeks with over 50+ million streams at this point on Spotify alone.

JANUARY 2018

At the 60th annual GRAMMY Awards, ‘Cola’ received a nomination for Best Dance Recording. This marked a landmark achievement for UK independent dance music.

OCTOBER 2017

Not content with just one hit remix, in comes legendary producer Mousse T. who infused his disco style into the track and uniting the Glitterbox vibes with Defected. While the Glitterbox crowd lapped up Mousse T.'s remix, the original had just entered BBC Radio 1's B-List - 'Cola' was becoming a crossover hit.

Mousse T.'s remix landed on the 13th October and followed the pattern by hitting No. 1 on Traxsource. While the remixes soared to the top end of the charts, the original had travelled acorss the pond to America, smashing it's way to No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Chart.

By the end of October, 'Cola' had exceeded all expectations and entered the Official UK Top 40, an incredible achievement for an underground record from an independent record label.

With all the mainstream attention, it was time to film an official video. The music video dropped as 'Cola' entered the BBC Radio 1 A-List. When MK dropped it at Manchester’s The Warehouse Project, it was clear just how big the track had become. The music video was added to the MTV playlist on 27th October plus Box and Clubland on the 30th.

'Cola' continued to grow, earning over 19 million Spotify streams. The track topped the Billboard Dance chart, Beatport chart, Traxsource chart, won Track Of The Year at the Ibiza Awards, was added to Radio 1 playlist, Kiss FM and more.

'Cola' was played during several sporting events, including Anthony Joshua's fight at the Millennium stadium, the NFL match between the Minnesota Vikings and Baltimore Ravens at Twickenham, and at half-time show during Manchester City and Arsenal’s match. It was an incredible four months, but the story wasn’t over yet.

SEPTEMBER 2017

As the track grew, we drafted in one of the most in-demand producers at the time to deliver his take on 'Cola'. Franky Rizardo's remix was an instant success, drawing one of the best reactions from the crowd when teased at our flagship festival Defected Croatia.

The remix was officially released on 1st September, also reached the No. 1 spot on Beatport with the original and Franky's remix occupying the top two spots in the Beatport House Chart.

More big news arrived on the 27th September when 'Cola' was voted Track Of The Year at the 2017 Ibiza Awards (their 20th anniversary year).

The month ended with a BBC Radio 1 playlist add on the 29th, meaning more airtime and bringing the track to a daytime audience.

JULY 2017

Sam Divine drops 'Cola' at Defected’s Eden residency in Ibiza

'Cola' was soon picked up by tastemaker DJs all over the world, and within one week of release soared to No. 1 on both the Beatport and Traxsource main charts. The track became an instant Ibiza anthem soon after, spending the majority of the season as the No. 1 most Shazamed track on the White Isle.

Each night at our Eden residency, 'Cola' became the most anticipated track. A video of Sam Divine dropping it went viral on our Facebook page, and we knew we had a special track on our hands.

JUNE 2017

CamelPhat and Elderbrook's now global track started no different from any of their other tracks, an underground record that the Liverpool duo had no idea how big it would become. Mike Di Scala, who makes up one half of CamelPhat, told Skiddle:

"When we made ‘Cola’ we didn't really think that much of it, it took four months to get it signed but once it did it sky rocketed".

The track originally debuted on Danny Howard's show as BBC Radio 1’s Hottest Record in the World in June of 2017. Dave Whelan, who completes the other half of CamelPhat, spoke to Danny, telling him the track was made in two or three hours after a lucky last minute meeting with Elderbrook in the studio.
