The BBC have put together a 5 hour radio programme for 6 Music documenting the legacy of one of the most influential clubs in the history of dance music; The Paradise Garage.
The show includes highlights from the second Birthday of Paradise Garage – often described as the prototype of the modern dance club – which closed in September 1987 and was the base for the legendary DJ Larry Levan. The club was founded by Michael Brody and located on King Street in the Hudson Square area of New York.
It ran from 1977 to 1987 and derives its name from its origins as a parking garage. Some of the people who performed at Paradise Garage include Dan Hartman, Divine, Gloria Gaynor, Jocelyn Brown and Grace Jones.
Featuring interviews with some of the key players and music that epitomised the club and the people who went there, this is a fitting tribute to a club the influence of which should never be underestimated.
