The latest musical addition to the Classic family is Mr Dan Beaumont. Integral in the birth of Disco Bloodbath, Paris’ Acid Ball, Macho City and setting up the London basement rave institutions Dance Tunnel and Dalston Superstore, Dan wowed Luke Solomon's heart a year ago after sending him this throwback, move forward disco hi - energy house stomper; the ‘Trippy Pumper’. Combined with ‘This Feeling’ and ‘Dan’s Jam’, plus some exclusive vinyl only remixes and one of the most ‘HOUSE’ music videos in existence, 2014 will be the year of the Trippy Pumper.
Here he drops an hour of deep, driving house music for Defected's In Their House mix series.
How’s the year treating you so far?
So far so good thanks... amazed by the response to the Trip EP and looking at some very exciting over the coming year
Tell us about your relationship with Classic… what is it about the label that you think has made it stand the test of time?
Classic has always been one of my favourite labels... It has an amazing heritage of putting out great dancefloor tracks from all corners of the house universe. I still play Classic classics all the time and the label has always maintained the difficult balance of leftfield strangeness with straight-up party bombs. Also they are amazing human beings to work with.
You’ve just released your debut EP for Classic… did you always have them in mind when you were making it?
Yeah I did! Shortly after I finished Trippy Pumper Luke Solomon happened to ask if I had any new tracks finished so I sent it to him. It was all rather serendipitous.
Tell us about the mix… when and where was it recorded?
I recorded this on a Saturday afternoon in Dance Tunnel. This is such an exciting time for house music that I wanted to squeeze in as much variety into an hour as possible so there are pumpers, bumpers, and some basement disco business. It's a pretty rough one-take mix and it's vinyl only but I think it's a nice snapshot of what I'm into. This week anyway. (Some of the transitions are a little fuzzy but that's because I was eating a pizza from upstairs at the time.)
Any tracks on there you’d like to highlight?
I'm especially obsessed with the Art Alfe and Mr Tophat track... Sublime. Also the Jovonn reissue on Clone Classic Cuts is a thing of beauty. And the mysterious white label. And the new Basement floor. And the Soundstream disco fix at the end . In fact I love them all!
As well as DJing and making music you run two venues and a pizza joint… is it a struggle to fit it all in?
I have the privilege of working with an amazing team of people and doing what I love, so I'm really very lucky.... being busy is never a bad thing.
Anything else you’d like to tell us about…?
If any of the music on the mix sounds interesting then you should probably tune in to Rhythm Connection which is my fortnightly radio jam on NTS Live with my co-pilot Nadia Ksaiba... Always a big pile of upfront house pumpers and special guest mixes from people like Spencer Parker, Mark E, Daniel Avery and some guy called Luke Solomon.
